Cheese products

Portrait of cheese products available in Quebec (2020-2025)

  • 142 processed cheeses have been listed for this study
  • 63% of cheese products listed in 2025 would have been required to display the front-of-package nutrition symbol
  • 57 % of processed cheeses sold are single-sized processed cheese products

At a glance

The results of this monitoring show that, overall, there were very few changes in the nutritional composition of cheese products offered and sold in 2025 compared to 2020. Although there were some improvements in reformulated cheese products, these are not sufficient to improve the supply on a larger scale. The presence of technological challenges related to reducing saturated fat and sodium is a notable factor that may explain this lack of improvement. Nevertheless, if no changes are made, more than half of the cheese products available in Quebec would be required to display the nutrition symbol on the front of their packaging due to their high saturated fat and/or sodium content. Considerable efforts will be required if an improvement in the nutritional composition of cheese products offered and sold in Quebec is truly desired. It would be appropriate to strengthen collaboration among processors, public health stakeholders, and experts in nutrition, food science, and communication to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply in Quebec.
