Salty snacks

Portrait of salty snacks available in Quebec (2019-2020)

  • 826 salty snacks were listed for this study

  • 567 mg of sodium in bretzels
  • 291 mg of sodium in chips

At a glance...

The results of this monitoring show that, overall, there has been little variation in the nutritional composition of salty snacks offered and sold in 2025 compared to 2020. Plain-flavored or certified organic snack foods continue to be better choices due to their nutritional values. Snacks that have remained unchanged since 2020 have a more appealing nutritional composition than others when data is weighted according to sales, but they represent only a very small proportion of all snacks. If no changes are made, nearly half of the snack foods available in Quebec would have to display the nutrition symbol on the front of their packaging due to their high saturated fat, sugar, and/or sodium content. Efforts must continue to improve the nutritional composition of snack foods offered and sold in Quebec in the coming years. To achieve this, it would be useful to establish more collaborative links between processors, public health stakeholders, and experts in nutrition, food science, and communication.
