What is the nutritional value of the foods we buy most? That’s what the Observatory reveals in its very first overview of the food supply, recently published.
In an article in Verdict Santé, the Observatory presents the results of its study conducted between 2016 and 2022. The nutritional value of 5,132 processed foods from 15 categories frequently consumed by Quebecers was assessed. This initial analysis revealed that 66% of processed foods purchased in the province contain excessive levels of sodium, sugars, or saturated fat.
Because they are widely consumed, sliced bread, cookies, salty snacks, breakfast cereals, and cheese products are among the processed foods that contribute the most to these nutrients of interest in Quebecers’ grocery baskets.
