The Food Quality Observatory helps you make more informed choices at the grocery store in a new Verdict Santé article. This time, we’re taking a closer look at granola bars, as well as yogurts and dairy desserts.
Although granola bars are a popular snack option, nearly one-third of those available on store shelves list sugar or chocolate as their first ingredient. When choosing a granola bar, make sure the first ingredient is a grain and that the bar does not exceed 15% of the daily value for sugars or saturated fat, as indicated on the nutrition facts table.
It’s interesting to note that granola bars containing only fruit are less expensive than the others.
Good news: Yogurts and dairy desserts purchased in 2023 contain 7% less sugar than those purchased in 2018. Overall, fruit-flavored yogurts contain less sugar than those with other flavors (e.g., vanilla, coffee, key lime pie) and should therefore be the preferred choice.
