After conducting a literature review on the subject, the Observatory notes that few studies have examined the factors that support the integration of a food option that is both local AND nutritious.
Although locally grown foods are often perceived as healthier for various reasons, very few studies actually demonstrate this link.
Incorporating the concepts of “local” and “nutritious” from the start, working collaboratively with suppliers and distributors, and focusing on education and awareness are the keys to successfully balancing local and nutritious food purchases in our schools.
