Still a lot of sodium in ready-to-serve soups and sliced processed meats

The Food Quality Observatory helps you make more informed choices at the grocery store. This time, we’re taking a closer look at ready-to-serve soups and sliced processed meats.

 

Unfortunately, there are very few good soup options on the market. Although there are only about a dozen soups that carry a sodium claim, sales of these products have been on the rise since 2017. Be part of the movement!

It should be noted that soups still provide too little protein to be eaten on their own as a meal.

 

For sliced processed meats, a total of 488 products were identified in grocery stores in 2022. Overall, these meats are higher in saturated fat than they were in 2017. Just as in 2017, nearly all of the sliced processed meats analyzed exceed the 15% daily value threshold for sodium.
