The Observatory’s publication in Public Health Nutrition continues to generate interest. Now it’s Protégez-vous’s turn to take a closer look. Sonia Pomerleau, a research professional at the Observatory, answered questions from Catherine Crépeau about the 60% of the best-selling products in Quebec that will be affected by Health Canada’s warning.
Foods high in saturated fat, sodium, or sugars will be required to display a warning on the front of their packaging to help consumers identify the least nutritious products. Health Canada will require this labeling starting January 1, 2026, to encourage the adoption of healthy eating habits. According to a study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, 60% of the best-selling foods in grocery stores will be affected by this requirement, unless manufacturers change the nutritional composition of their products by then.
